Naval District Washington commemorated the 83rd anniversary of the Battle of Midway with a wreath-laying ceremony at the U.S. Navy Memorial on June 4, 2025.

WASHINGTON - Naval District Washington commemorated the 83rd anniversary of the Battle of Midway with a wreath-laying ceremony at the U.S. Navy Memorial on June 4, 2025.

The Battle of Midway, fought over and near Midway Atoll—approximately 1,500 nautical miles northwest of Hawaii—marked a pivotal turning point and the strategic high-water mark of the Pacific War.

Acting Chief of Naval Operations U.S. Navy Adm. James Kilby, joined by Rear Adm. David Faenhle, Commandant, Naval District Washington, placed a wreath on the memorial in honor of the Americans who fought at the Battle of Midway.

“This year’s anniversary is perhaps even more significant, as we recognize and pay tribute to another Navy milestone, the 250th anniversary of the United States Navy,” said Kilby. “For me Midway is the most consequential event in our country's naval history, marking the halt of the Japanese advance in the Pacific.”

During his remarks, Kilby told the stories of Sailors who fought during the Battle of Midway, to include Adm. Chester Nimitz, Capt. Richard Fleming, Rear Adm. Wade McClusky, Lt. Cmdr. Richard Best and Vice Adm. Elliot Buckmaster.

Ending his remarks, Kilby shared a quote about Midway from American historian Walter Lord, which stated “Even against the greatest of odds, there is something in the human spirit - a magic blend of skill, faith, and valor - that can lift men from certain defeat to incredible victory.”

Following Kilby’s remarks, the ceremony closed with a benediction from Chief of Chaplains of the Navy Rear Adm. Gregory Todd.
