Captain Garett Houston is a native of Pembroke Pines, Florida. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science in 2005 and was designated a naval aviator in June 2007. He is also a distinguished graduate of the National War College and earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Florida.
Captain Houston’s sea duty assignments include serving as aviation safety officer and pilot training officer with Patrol Squadron (VP) 4 during his first operational tour, as assistant navigator on USS Nimitz (CVN-68), and as safety officer and operations officer with VP-10 as a department head. He also served as commanding officer of the VP-26 “Tridents” and deployed twice to the Seventh Fleet area of responsibility.
Ashore, Houston served as aviation safety officer and pilot training officer for the P-8A Fleet Introduction Team at VP-30, the Fleet Replacement Squadron for the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance community. He also served as the operations officer for Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing (CPRW) 11. Following his command tour, he studied at the National War College and most recently served as Assistant Deputy Director for Political-Military Affairs (Europe, NATO, Russia), Joint Staff J5.
Captain Houston has accumulated 2,700 flight hours in the P-3C and P-8A. His personal decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2), Air Medal Strike/Flight (5), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3), and various other unit, campaign, and service awards.
