Commander Alex McMahon

Commander Alex McMahon is a native of New Jersey. He is a 2004 graduate of Fordham University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science. He received his commission through the NROTC program at SUNY Maritime College.

Upon receiving his commission in 2004, he reported to USS DUBUQUE (LPD 8) where he served as First Division Officer, Repair Officer, and Electrical Officer deploying in 2006 with the USS BOXER ARG in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM (OEF) and the surge for OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM (OIF). Subsequent sea tours included Operations Officer for Patrol Coastal Crew JULIET in USS SIROCO (PC 6), USS SQUALL (PC 7), and USS FIREBOLT (PC 10) deploying twice during OIF, and as the Chief Engineer in USS HOPPER (DDG 70) from 2012 to 2014 where HOPPER deployed to the Arabian Gulf as a ballistic missile defense ship in support of OEF. From 2014 to 2015 he served as the Maintenance & Material Officer for Amphibious Squadron 3 ensuring ESSEX ARG deployed on time and combat ready in support of OEF. From 2018 to 2020, Commander McMahon served as the Executive Officer of the USS MOUNT WHITNEY (LCC 20), the 6th Fleet Flagship, homeported in Gaeta, Italy.

Ashore, Commander McMahon served from 2008-2009 in Baghdad, Iraq as the Operations Officer for the Multi-National Forces – Iraq CJ9 staff and as the Executive Officer (Aide) to the Deputy Director, MNF-I CJ9. He was an Assistant Professor of Naval Science at SUNY Maritime College which served Fordham University, Molloy College, and Columbia University NROTC programs. He was a Naval Strategist and Future Operations Planner for U.S. Pacific Fleet, where he was the lead planner for the Fleet Battle Problem series & the maritime contribution to the US Maximum Pressure Campaign towards North Korea. Following his XO tour on MOUNT WHITNEY he served as the Chief Staff Officer for Destroyer Squadron Four Zero and Task Force 45.
He is currently serving as the Commanding Officer for the US Navy Ceremonial Guard in Washington, D.C.

He earned a Master of Arts in Defense and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in Newport, RI in 2016 and is a graduate of the Maritime Advanced Warfighting School. He is both a Naval Strategist and Operational Planner.

Among his personal decorations are the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 awards), and various unit and service awards.

He and his wife, Lindsay, live in Virginia and they have two daughters.
