CDR Hessell’s first Division Officer assignment was as Strike Officer aboard USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53) deploying twice to 7^th Fleet. He then reported as Navigator aboard USS JOHN L. HALL (FFG 32) deploying to 6^th Fleet. His department head tours were served aboard USS GARY (FFG 51) as Operations Officer, deploying to 4^th Fleet and as Operations Officer
for USS LITTLE ROCK (LCS 9) Gold Crew. His most recent assignment was as Executive Officer aboard USS FORT WORTH (LCS 3).

Ashore, CDR Hessell served as a Training Liaison Officer at Afloat Training Group San Diego. While there, he served as an Individual Augmentee to EXPEDITIONARY STRIKE GROUP FIVE in Manama, Bahrain. He also served as a Maritime Warfare Instructor at Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, RI.

CDR Hessell assumed duties as Executive Officer of the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard in February 2024.

CDR Hessell is authorized to wear the Navy Commendation Medal (six awards), the Navy Achievement Medal (three awards) and various unit and personal awards.
