Dahlgren is located about 30 miles east of Fredericksburg, VA approximately an hour and a half south of Washington, D.C. and an hour and forty minutes north of Richmond, Virginia. The closest airport is Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C.
If you're arriving at the Reagan National Airport in Washington DC, your commute will be at least 1 1/2 hours depending on commuter rush hour. When leaving the Reagan National Airport, follow US Route 1 South to I-495 North. You will cross the Woodrow Wilson Bridge into Maryland, take Route 210 south (Indian Head Highway) for 10 miles. Turn left onto Route 228 (seven miles). Turn south onto Route 301 (27.5 miles). Continue on Route 301 south to the Harry Nice Bridge toll plaza ($3). Approximately two miles after the bridge on the Virginia side turn left at 2nd traffic light onto Route 206E (Dahlgren Road) continue straight ahead until you reach the Dahlgren Main Gate.
FROM INTERSTATE 95: Take I-95 South to Exit 130A (Route 3 East) towards downtown Fredericksburg. Continue straight on Route 3 (Blue/Grey Highway) for approximately two miles. Bear to the right on Route 3 towards King George and proceed 17 miles to Route 206 (Dahlgren Road). Proceed on Route 206 for 11 miles until you get to the intersection of Route 301 and 206. Continue straight ahead on Route 206 until you reach the Dahlgren Main Gate.
FROM NORFOLK AND POINTS SOUTH: Please allow at least 2-1/2 hours. Take I-64 West to Route 17 (Exit 258) for 18.5 miles. Go north on Route 17 to Route 301 Port Royal (101.5 miles). Turn right onto Route 301 North for about 15-20 miles. Turn right on Route 206 E in Dahlgren at the traffic light at the intersection of the Burger King and 7-11 stores. Proceed to Dahlgren Main Gate. From Norfolk, you can also take Interstate 64 to Richmond VA and pick up Interstate 95 North to the Fredericksburg Exit at Route 3 East. Follow directions given above from I-95.
TRAIN OR BUS: If you are arriving by train or bus, both make stops in Fredericksburg about 30 miles from Dahlgren. The AMTRAK train stops in downtown Fredericksburg and there is a Greyhound bus station on Princess Anne Street in Fredericksburg located across the street from the famous Carl's Ice Cream Stand. There is no public transportation to Dahlgren. Taxi service is available but can be expensive ($60).

Our efforts to maintain the high quality Navy we need capitalizes on the talents and motivation of each of our Sailors to continue to build our Navy to one ready to face the unknown challenges of the future. We cannot afford to train our Sailors for the predictable and routine duties. We need Sailors who are educated to confront the unpredictable, to anticipate the impossible, to plan for the unimaginable.
The use of information technology has the potential to upset long-held beliefs and create new opportunities, and those tried and true methods that worked on the battlefields of the past may not hold for the challenges to come. Our successful efforts today to obtain the resources to educate our Sailors and to put them into positions where they can realize their true potential, leading the culture of change from the end of the industrial age to lead the wave of the information age, will resonate generations from now.
We are transforming the way our Navy develops and equips our men and women. As our Navy becomes even more technologically advanced, our workforce will get smaller--and smarter.
This will be a Navy which values those who can accept responsibility, who can adapt swiftly and eagerly to the changes in our organization, and yet be sensitive to the needs of their shipmates, more than those who remain specialized in the status quo of their existing rating of today. Self-reliant and complex people with the courage to think independently and challenge and question the way we’ve done things are sought by the Navy to create new knowledge and information.
In considering budget realities, our flexible and adaptive uses of existing materials in new ways seems best for a Navy to remain relevant, and be able to anticipate and respond to threats in a world that is neither predictable nor, perhaps regarding the radicalism of our current enemy in the Global War on Terrorism, easily understood.
To paraphrase self-educated philosopher Eric Hoffer, in times of drastic change, it is the lifelong learners who inherit the future, while the trained usually find themselves equipped to live in a world that will no longer exist.
If you're ready, the Navy is ready to help you. Click here to visit the Navy College page to continue your journey of lifelong learning.
