Proposed WNY Land Acquisition

Pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), as implemented by the Council on Environmental Quality Regulations, the Department of the Navy (DON) completed an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Proposed Land Acquisition at the Washington Navy Yard (WNY). The Final EIS evaluated the environmental impacts associated with the acquisition of land at the Southeast Federal Center, adjacent to the WNY.

After carefully weighing the strategic, operational, and environmental consequences of the proposed action, DON selected Alternative 1A (Preferred Alternative) from the Final EIS for implementation. The selected alternative will enable the Navy to improve the Antiterrorism (AT) posture, protect adjacent mission-critical activities from encroachment, and otherwise meet the purpose and need of this action. Additionally, this alternative allows the Navy to meet a long-term need of relocating the existing museum. Construction and operation of the relocated museum will provide a location for a new, world-class museum for public enjoyment and bring potential retail and commercial amenities to the local area. The complete text of the Record of Decision (ROD), along with the August 2023 Final EIS and supporting document is available below.
